INTERVIEW INTERVIEW September 9, 2020 SPAIN COLLECTIVE Photography by Aneeka Manku Interview by Melanie Meggs Aneeka Manku is a photographer based in England whose work is inspired by the beauty of everyday life. From the land, nature, and architecture, to the people, interactions and the destruction, Aneeka’s photography captures the emotions, simplicity, and stillness of our world. Her subjects are often lone, still and quiet, with color used to express her feelings. In 2019, Aneeka embarked on a journey through Spain, capturing the country’s bright and beautiful landscapes. The result was her series SPAINCOLLECTIVE 2019: a collection of high contrast photos that display a homely, intriguing view of Spain that will leave you in awe. As you explore Aneeka's journey to Valencia, Cuenca and The Pyrenees, be prepared for an immersive experience that will leave you feeling connected to this incredible country. “Simplicity, feeling and stillness is what best sums up my work. I always feel that there are two captures for each photograph - one is with your eyes and the second with the camera. There is feeling attached to each capture and what you are trying to do is best portray that feeling through your own creative, technical and editorial style. A finished photograph should feel whole, and completely focused on that moment.” IN CONVERSATION WITH ANEEKA MANKU THE PICTORIAL LIST: Aneeka please tell us when you started getting interested in photography? ANEEKA MANKU: I’ve always had a keen interest in photography but didn’t pursue it until very recently, around 1-2 years ago, when my partner gifted me my first DSLR camera. I guess my interest began from a very young age when I would take pictures at family gatherings and on holidays. TPL: Where do you find your inspiration? AM: It may be cliche, but inspiration is anywhere and everywhere! Unless I am going out to shoot a specific event or experience, inspiration is usually instigated on daily journeys and ordinary routines. For me, what becomes to be the subject, sparks inspiration by itself. TPL: Do you have any favourite artists or photographers you would like to share with us, and the reason for their significance? AM: Quite a few but a couple I would highlight are - Steve McCurry - I absolutely love his work as it feels very real and true to the people and places captured. The visual outcome is simply beautiful, particularly with use of colour, something with I love to play with in my own photography. Alexander Bronfer - Bronfer’s work stands out among many for me. His style is simplistically unique, yet each photograph speaks volumes. The finish of his photographs create depth and add to the overall feeling of the image itself. Others include: Joel Meyerowitz, Raul Canibano and Michael Yamashita. For me, what becomes to be the subject, sparks inspiration by itself. TPL: Where is your favourite place to photograph? AM: I wouldn’t say I have a favourite place to photograph, each experience is different and not be compared. TPL: Have you ever been involved in the artistic world before photography? AM: No I haven’t, photography is my first and solely pursued artistic passion…so far! "When I am not out photographing, I (like to)… AM: Besides reading and a love for the outdoors, you would find me researching psychology-related topics - another passion which I will be taking one step further by studying for my MSc in Psychology this year. Sometime in the future I would like to incorporate psychology within my photography, working with other collaborators on social and community projects." We take the opportunity to thank Aneeka for sharing with us her journey through Spain which is inspired by ordinary life and that in which it embodies. Connect with Aneeka on Instagram and continue following her travels. AN ODE TO SPONTANEITY AND SERENDIPITY Meera Nerurkar captures not just what is seen but also what is felt, turning the everyday into something worth a second glance. TRUE LIFE IMPRESSIONS Matthias Godde's meticulously curates photographs that blend observation with introspection, resonating with profound emotional depth and infused with wit, irony, and occasional absurdity. NATURE KNOWS NO PAUSE Through her photographs Ann Petruckevitch captures the resilience of nature amidst the challenges of climate change, serving as a reflection on humanity’s relationship with the natural world. URBAN ECHOES Through his project “Echo,” Rowell B. Timoteo extends an invitation to explore the vibrant streets of San Fernando, where his lens captures the nuanced interplay of light, shadow, and human emotion. COLORS OF A GREY CITY In Rafa Rojas' photography project, we witness the convergence of passion and purpose, a visual ode to the city of São Paulo he calls home. PRIMAL INSTINCT Tara Sellios invites us to explore the interplay of life and death, of decay and beauty, and to find within that juxtaposition a reflection of our own existential journey. OPPORTUNITIES The Pictorial List partners with International Photography Awards, enhancing resources for photographers worldwide. We interview IPA founder Hossein Farmani, a visionary in photography.

The work should be viewed in the context of my book LANDSCAPES OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA, published by Wakefield Press. My previous publications, ADELAIDE NOIR and THEATRE OF LIFE were focused on, respectively, Industrial Art and Portraiture. The new book is a comprehensive photographic work that finds truth in landscape photography. This means that an honest artistic approach is required to see the landscapes as not only ancient and massive, but dry (driest state, driest continent) with marginal farming opportunities and a kind of rusted beauty that speaks of resilience and the triumph of human spirit. In terms of the continuum of my career, the series of landscapes tie together the threads of my film pedigree because I see my frames in terms of 'mise-en-scene', a device used by film makers. I believe that both landscapes and portraits require the aesthetical approach that a director would bring to film. Photography is not a passive art-form, of merely waiting and getting lucky. It requires the same approach and awareness and philosophical drive and desire that any contemporary art form requires. I am a 37 year old dreamer, born and raised in an artsy family in the northern part of Romania, where my love for landscaping and passion to create things with my own hands have always been nurtured and encouraged by my parents. I have been living and working in London for the past ten years now. I have been nursing fantasies about photo shooting art since I was a young boy. Back home, I used to watch my father painting and create his amazing drawings on canvas. I first dreamt of becoming an artist, just like my father...it never happened, I felt I was never as good as he was. I pay homage to his talent and artistic spirit through my work today. I started releasing my creative flows in photography about nine years ago. Educated in machinery, with a sense for exact sciences and geometry of things in life, I feel that I can capture specific emotions when the right angle of colour and light it's applied. The black-and-white photography segment is the one niche that I best identity myself with...with a bit of an 'eternal snapshot' twist. I like capturing the quintessence of someone's inner beauty and nostalgia. I have been awarded the first place in the international photography contest by Cityscape BW and my photographs frequently appear in Monopix, Eyephoto and Photoshop Magazine. My camera is my best companion on the streets of London and I never miss an opportunity to capture the special flavour of an after-rain street landscape or the unspoken charm of a surprising sunset. People say that one photo means more than a 1,000 words...I like saying that beauty in photography cannot be limited by words. I have always taken pictures. At home, outside, and in a previous life as a journalist when I took photos for my articles. However, it gained momentum after a series of serious setbacks in my personal life. I could have jumped in front of a train, but went out on the street instead and frantically started shooting in a desire for some peace and quiet. I have not yet returned from that trip. Most of my work categorises as street photography, since I almost exclusively photograph in public spaces and often have people appearing in my images. Yet, my work is not really about people or human activities, nor is it about social issues. I see my photos as tiny fragments of what’s around us. Scenes or objects that are basically irrelevant, but that are able to convey some sort of emotion when taken out of context or isolated by the eye of the photographer. What kind of emotion is something I leave up to the viewer. I like to keep things ambiguous. That's when art is at its best. I shoot most of my work in Antwerp and Brussels. Apart from my own work I help fellow photographers during workshops and through a popular Dutch-language blog on street photography. Photography is my hobby, my inspiration, my expression form, and much more. I always try to include the human element in my street pictures, therefore 2020 was a challenging year for my normal way of taking pictures. I have started to take much more architecture pictures, especially at night and in the lonely streets. I look forward to the normal life and to let go again without any concern. My future photography will be a mix of the street photography, night photography and architecture. I hope to add a little of street portraits too, but let us see...
